One of the best things you can do is build intentional portrait time into your wedding timeline. You don’t need hours, but giving your photographer enough time to explore different areas of your venue allows for a much more varied gallery.
Instead of taking every portrait in one location, you can move between architecture, gardens, pathways, and open landscapes to create completely different images. Giving yourself room to explore also allows your photographer to find unexpected spots that may end up becoming some of your favorite photographs.
Pay Attention to the Light
The same location can look completely different depending on the time of day. Midday light can create dramatic, high-contrast images, while later afternoon and golden hour offer softer, warmer light.
When planning your timeline, ask your photographer when the best light will be at your venue. Even sneaking away for 10–15 minutes during golden hour can result in some of your favorite images of the day.
Look Beyond the Obvious Backdrop
Don’t just look for the “perfect” photo spot. Look at the entire property.
A garden path, staircase, architectural detail, hillside, or open field can all become beautiful portrait locations when they’re paired with the right light and composition.
